In Verdi’s opera “La Traviata”, Lady of the night Violetta Valéry, who lives an affluent but empty and loveless life, falls for her young admirer. This marks the end of her heyday, and they both ultimately suffer for love. Violetta must sacrifice her love to enable another young woman to obtain happiness.
The story of a beautiful courtesan and her unbearable love has inspired popular cuture such as the Hollywood movie “Moulin Rouge”, where the penniless writer (Ewan McGregor) falls in love with the courtesan Sadine (Nicole Kidman), who succumbs from tuberculosis (as did Verdi’s own lover, the real Parisian Violetta six years before he finished writing the opera “La Traviata”).
